5 Traits Of Effective Team Leaders
Set your team up for success in 2023 by reviewing your leadership skills and team productivity. Learn the traits of effective leaders and what you can do to better support your team in the new year.
1. Clear Communicators
Great leaders communicate well. When we think of communicating we often think of a leader’s ability to vision-cast or command a room confidently. In today’s work environment, communicating is less about hierarchy and more about emotional intelligence. Part of communicating is being able to read a room, understanding changes in workflow, and being able to put oneself in the position of each team member. When changes happen within an organization (for example in a department), effective leaders also take time to consider how this affects each member of the team and how to communicate those changes in a way that is clearly understood and that builds a bridge.
2. Problem-solvers
This brings us to the next point. Effective leaders are great problem solvers. Challenges arise in all work environments, but effective leaders see them as an opportunity to build skills and think creatively. An effective leader is able to think outside of the box and provide solutions that may not be as obvious. They also think in terms of win-win for everyone on the team and use challenges as a way of drawing out the skills and best in those they lead.
3. Team orientated
An effective team leader keeps the team at the forefront. Competitive environments can squelch team unity, but an effective leader will find ways to help each member shine in what they bring to the table. This means prioritizing relationships. In order for leaders to do this, they must know their team. Building loyalty and long-term buy-in on a team is a result of knowing who each person is and placing them in the right positions, giving them the tools to succeed.
4. Time managers
Leaders that are effective are also leaders that spend time on what matters. There is a saying that leaders should spend 80% of their time doing the things that actually produce results and 20% of the time on the work that can be considered busy work. Part of time management is being able prioritize. Being able to identity what is urgent, what can wait, and what is not essential is a skill all leaders need to develop.
5. Professional and respectful
Leaders set the tone for the way the entire team communicates. Part of leading effectively is treating everyone with the same level of respect and kindness. Teams notice when one person receives preferetnial treatment or the leader begins to cross ethical boundaries. Great leaders work to maintain professionalism, fairness, and kindness in the environment, making it safe and welcoming for all.
